Board Meeting
By: Melissa Chwascinski
Central
High School’s Board of Education recently held a meeting on Monday, October 18.
The Board of Education was informed of the work needed to be done on the School
Improvement Plan since we are now in the Academic Early Warning status. They
anticipate bringing a new, improved, and restructured School Improvement Plan
to the December meeting for board approval. The Board of Education was also
updated on the status of the Summer 2010 project. They still have two very
minor things to check off before closing the project officially.
A
two year renewal was approved with J.W. Boyle, Inc. to complete the FY11 and
FY12 budgetary audits at a two percent increase in fees. The Board also
received an enrollment projection for upcoming class sizes and overall number
of students. Enrollment may decline over the next few years. The Building
Committee made a report of their recent meeting. They are focusing on the
construction of the outdoor restrooms at the Football/Track Facility.
Lastly,
the Board of Education took official action to employ a new Teacher Aide. Mrs.
Christina Tebbe will be serving as an interpreter for the ESL students, as well
as taking some responsibilities in the Guidance Department.

Congratulations to senior,
Chelsie Markus for being chosen student of the week! Central’s Lady Cougar is
the daughter of Jim and Donna Markus and an older sister to Haley Markus, who
live in Aviston.
According to nominating teacher,
Robert Pierce, he states, “Besides her obvious tenacity in the classroom, she
is a sincere and courteous classmate.”
Chelsie is planning on attending
SIU-E in the fall of 2011 for Computer Management and Information Systems. She
also enjoys shopping. She was excited when she found out she was nominated
student of the week. Chelsie will receive a free pizza and pitcher of soda from

The sophomore PCCS members
recently went to Kaskaskia College for a business ethics workshop just for
sophomores. There, students learned about discussing current issues and events.
They also worked in teams to decide on ethical decisions in the workplace.
After the ethics discussion,
students talked about proper dressing in the workplace. Ms. Davis, a teacher
that supervised the students, said, “The workshop was a great opportunity for
students to learn about ethics in the workplace.”
Senior
Night

With a record of 23-11, Central’s
volleyball team has made it a great year so far. On Thursday, October 21, the team celebrated
and honored their seniors with senior night. Coach Jim Cook stated, “It’s such
a crazy night. The team is playing better and the seniors contributed a lot.”
On this night, seniors received
flowers from the school and will be taken out after the season by head coach,
Jim Cook. Senior player, Lauren Markus, quoted, “I think we’re doing good. We
are playing harder and more as a team. It’s sad it’s our last year playing
together, because we’ve all grown so close and we won’t ever be playing
together again after this season.” Cook seemed to agree, when he said, “I think
they’re definitely close. All kids have their own groups, but they’ve always
been together which makes it better.”
The senior players for 2010-11
school year include, Jessica Hale, Lauren Markus, Chelsie Markus, Jena Hemann,
and Shelby Kohrmann.
Teacher
Feature

Congratulations to Mrs. Kali
Carroll for being this week’s Teacher Feature. Mrs. Carroll has been teaching
at Central for five years. She began in August of 2006. Mrs. Carroll has been teaching Special
Education at Central for four years.
This year she has accepted the position as school counselor.
When asked why she wanted to be a
counselor, she replied, “We have a great group of kids here, and I wanted the
one on one time with them to help the kids decide on their class, future, and
to just be here to help.” Mrs. Carroll has a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education
and Master’s in school counseling. She also helps as one of the supervisors of
PCCS.
Mrs. Carroll has one daughter
named Ella. When she has spare time, she likes to be with her family and go
shopping.
