Blood Drive
Zach
Eversgerd, Reporter
The
American Red Cross came from St. Louis to Central for the annual Blood Drive.
The school worked hard to meet this year’s goal to collect 63 units of blood.
The blood donated will be sent to St. Louis to be tested, and then given to
various hospitals in Southern Illinois.
The
blood drive was started about 50 years ago in the 1960’s by Clara Berta.
Roughly 100 students signed up for the drive. The Red Cross was able to collect
a total of 62 units which just barely reached Central’s goal of 63 units. Mrs.
Rittenhouse said, “The blood drive was a success. Anytime more blood is
collected than the year before is a success.”
The Red Cross hosts about 20 drives a day in schools all around Clinton County.
Before any students are allowed to donate, all potential donors must go through
a series of tests to see if their blood is eligible for donation. The nurses
check vitals and check for piercings or tattoos. The also check if the
potential donors have traveled to any other countries recently, or if they’re
on any medication.
FFA travels to
Anheiser Busch
Billy Sullivan,
Reporter
On
Friday, February 12, the Senior Ag and FFA classes took a field trip to the St.
Louis Anheiser-Busch building. Students
took a tour of the factory and were able to see the different departments it
takes to create the brewing process. The
tour guide explained all the ingredients and steps it took to make beer and
other Anheiser products.
It
was quite a learning opportunity for the Agriculture students. Being a large agriculture corporation,
Anheiser Busch uses many products agriculture students learn about and work
with. For instance, byproducts are used
as animal feed.
Students
were also able to see the Clydesdales and Dalmatians which, for many years,
have been the symbols of Anheiser-Busch.
FFA student Travis Albers said, “I really enjoyed the field trip and
learned quite a bit from it.” He
wouldn’t mind taking more field trips to places like Anheiser-Busch.
Aviston Grade
School Auction Donation
Skyler Woodburn,
Reporter
Travis
Holtgrave made a beautiful end table out of oak that was leftover in the shop
and parts that were purchased by Kurt Peters.
Mr. Peters asked Travis to build and donate the end table to the Aviston
Grade School Auction. It took him roughly two and a half weeks to build.
The
purpose of the Aviston Grade School Auction is to raise money for the
technology department in the Aviston Grade School. This means more to Travis
because this was his grade school. Mr. Peters thinks that it is awesome that he
is donating this end table because he is giving back to his school and he’s
good at making wood products.
Dance Team
Competition and Senior Farewell.
Senior dance team member and team
captain, Kayla Taylor will take the Central dance team to what may be her final
Dance competition at the Highland Regional on Saturday, February 27. The girls will compete for a chance to make
it to the State Dance competition. The girls
advanced to super sectionals three years ago.
The team captain Kayla Taylor was
acknowledged on senior night as the only senior member of the 2009-2010 dance
team. Kayla has been a member of the
dance team since her freshman year and was part of the super sectionals team
three years ago. Good luck to Kayla and
the Central Dance team on Saturday at Highland.
