The regular meeting of the Board of Education of Central Community High School was held on August 21, 2023 at 7:00PM in the Media Center.

Members present were Mary Lou Voss, Tanya Kampwerth, Jeff Kampwerth, Kori Voss, Laura Jansen, Amy Kruse and Tim Richter.  Visitors included Gina Benhoff.

Dr. Foutch mentioned that the Maintenance and Custodial staff should be commended for their work this summer in preparing our facility for the upcoming year.  Clay did a great job coordinating work on general maintenance in addition to working with several projects this summer. The entire staff did a great job in preparing everything (both inside and outside) and completing the cleaning, waxing, painting, preparing, moving tables and chairs, etc.  Simply, the guys went above and beyond this summer.  Mike Kuper, Dave Ratermann, and Wayne Deiters, along with our student workers Griffen Becker and Kayden Rakers deserve to be commended for their efforts. 

Our in-person and online registration processes last week worked very well in getting schedules out and completing schedule changes for students. Thank you to Jamie Hewlett for taking the time to work the Welcome Desk at our registration.  This worked out extremely well as she was able to explain to parents all of the details in regards to the required health paperwork to start school.  Currently, we are emphasizing the completion of physicals for 9th graders, and the completion of the meningococcal vaccine for seniors, prior to the start of school.

As always, this summer has been a big deal in the Technology program.  Anthony and his “Dream Team” of Carter Niemeyer and Brendan Reynolds have done an excellent job preparing for the new school year.  The Technology program we offer our students and staff at Central is outstanding.

On Wednesday, August 9^th, Dr. Foutch completed a walkthrough of our parking lot project with our architect.  If you have driven by the school lately, you may have noticed that we are holding a considerable amount of water around the northeast corner of the lot.  This is due to the main drain in that area being clogged with mud.  We have had some severe rains lately and the large amount of precipitation that fell in a small amount of time caused a few big washouts around our drains, clogging them with mud.  This is a very fixable problem as KRB installed protective mesh inside the covers to keep the mud from getting into the main drain line.  Also, once we are able to recondition all the soil in that area, plant grass, and install exterior water flow screens, we should no longer have this issue.  To say that our drainage system on the new lot has been “put to the test” over the last few weeks would be a major understatement. We also noticed a couple spots in the new lot that were soft after the last major rain.  The architect is going to wait until the area gets dry to see how it settles.  If those spots continue to be a problem, then KRB will need to come back and remediate those areas prior to our approval of their final pay application.

Becky summarized the preliminary FY24 Budget. A motion to set a Budget Hearing for September 18 at 6:45PM was made by Kori, second by Jeff.  Roll call vote: Aye – Mary Lou Voss, Laura Jansen, Kori Voss, Tanya Kampwerth, Tim Richter, Amy Kruse, Jeff Kampwerth.  Nay – None

A motion to approve retirement of Melinda Knapp as an instructional aide was made by Laura, second by Tanya.   Roll call vote: Aye – Mary Lou Voss, Laura Jansen, Kori Voss, Tanya Kampwerth, Tim Richter, Amy Kruse, Jeff Kampwerth.  Nay – None

A motion to approve resignation of Kenneth Savchuck as the In-school Suspension Supervisor was made by Tanya, second by Laura.   Roll call vote: Aye – Mary Lou Voss, Laura Jansen, Kori Voss, Tanya Kampwerth, Tim Richter, Amy Kruse, Jeff Kampwerth.  Nay – None

A motion to employ Greg Meyer as the In-School Suspension Supervisor pending all necessary requirements are met was made by Kori, second by Amy. Roll call vote: Aye – Mary Lou Voss, Laura Jansen, Kori Voss, Tanya Kampwerth, Tim Richter, Amy Kruse, Jeff Kampwerth.  Nay – None

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:

A welcome back letter went out to the entire Central community on Wednesday, July 19, 2023. The purpose of this letter is to assure parents that we are passionate/dedicated about providing the best possible education for their students, as well as, to provide important information about the beginning of school activities.

Enrollment for 2023-2024 (as of 8/17/23)

- Freshmen: 155 (F - 74, M - 81)

- Sophomore: 165 (F - 79, M - 86)

- Junior: 156 (F - 64, M - 92)

- Senior: 155 (F - 70, M - 85)

- Total 631

Online registration for our 10th - 12th graders was successful as well, with only a few hiccups with the skyward system.

All athletics parent/player meeting - this meeting was held on August 6th and very well attended. It’s a night of expectations for all parents and players, a night that everyone understands what it means to be a part of Central Athletics.

On August 15th we welcomed all of our freshmen and their parents to Central and gave them the opportunity to walk their schedules and meet the teachers. We ran the evening a bit different this year and it went much smoother and was far less confusing, which is what they need.

Opening Day Faculty Meeting - this morning was full of motivation, inspiration, laughs, tears, challenges, and reconnecting with the Central Family. Dr. Foutch talked about the “WHY” and Mr. Freeze focused on “exceeding the expectations.” The rest of the day was spent in department meetings, preparing classrooms, and getting ready to roll out the red carpet for our students.

Again this year we will participate in the “Tackle for Hunger'' campaign along with Mater Dei leading up to the Milk Bowl. This year, since we are the host school, KSDK will be here to shoot video and interview coaches and players. We will have a pep rally at 6:00am on September 1st. Also, due to the success of last year and being one of the top schools all year in the canned food drive, we have been asked to be on Show Me St. Louis during the “tailgate” segment.
